Campaign overview

The new SunSmart campaign has been launched off the back of research showing twice as many Aussie men as women die from skin cancer and men tend to be more complacent about sun protection despite knowing the risks. 79% of men surveyed agreed if they regularly protect themselves from the sun, they can avoid skin cancer. However less than half say that sun protection is part of their daily routine and less than one in three men used sunscreen and stayed in the shade on summer weekends.

Funded by the Victorian Government, the campaign aims to remind men about the dangers of UV and how easy it is to protect your skin to reduce the risks of cancer.

Our message is, if you cover something it lasts longer. The rule applies to your possessions and it also applies to your skin – at any age.

Key messages

  • More than twice as many men as women die from skin cancer in Victoria each year.
  • It’s never too late to start protecting your skin – whether you’re 6, 16 or 60 – protecting your skin at any age will help reduce the risk of skin cancer.
  • Around 95% of skin cancers are caused by UV exposure. But the good news is it’s largely preventable using the five forms of sun protection.
  • Men typically spend more time outdoors than women, and the new study is showing they’re also more complacent about sun protection. This puts them at much greater risk of skin cancer.
  • If you work outdoors, use sun protection all year round as the UV damage is cumulative, putting you at much higher risk of skin cancer.

  • Even if you think the damage has been done, it’s never too late for men to boost their sun protection. Melanoma killed 270 Victorians in 2019 – twice as many men as women.

  • Are you a man who works outdoors?
Spending long periods of time outdoors put you at higher risk of skin cancer because of the constant exposure to damaging UV. Our research shows men can be complacent with their sun protection which increases the risk further. If you’re not motivated to cover up for yourself, think about someone you care about, and do it for them.
