In local government

Local government is in a unique position to help prevent skin cancer.

Local government can ensure that the community has access to facilities and services that provide protection from ultraviolet (UV) radiation, which is known to cause the vast majority of skin cancers in Australia. In addition local government can provide information to the community about personal sun protection measures as recommended by SunSmart.

Address skin cancer in your community

Identify skin cancer as a public health issue and include sun protection strategies within council policies and strategic statements
Plan and design effective shade for the community
Implement a sun protection program for council employees
  • Protecting others from skin cancer at work
Promote sun protection to the community
Ensure council-controlled facilities and programs, such as swimming pools and early childhood services, have sun protection policies and practices in place
