Winners announced.... drum roll please!

Wednesday 27 April, 2011

The winners of the Tell us your SunSmart tip and win! competition have been announced.

We were delighted with the enthusiastic response from farmers and rural workers across Victoria keen to share their top tips on how to be SunSmart on the farm so congratulations and thanks to all who entered.

The winning words came from: Lisa de Giorgio, Michael Potter and Colin Barlow. Here are their top tips:

1. SLIP SLOP SLAP... Create a body map! Photograph moles and spots, recording changes can help lots!!! Darker? Bigger? Be aware... Seek advice- take SunSmart care!

2. In the morning, after I've brushed my teeth, I put sunscreen on my face not forgetting my neck and ears and on my arms and other exposed areas so it has become part of my normal daily routine. A hat gets pulled over my head as soon as I am ready to walk out the back door and I keep a bottle of sunscreen in the ute so I can refresh as needed. Sunglasses live on my dashboard and are part of my daily usage now. This was not always part of my routine. I used to consider it woosey until my partner convinced me that perhaps having bits of my face removed as I got older was not a good option and I had probably already done some damage but could halt and prevent doing any more.

3. I have a reminder set on my Blackberry. I receive a daily reminder to make sure I've slipped, slopped and slapped before I commence work!

All three winners will receive a $500 voucher to the Cancer Council shop enabling them to buy all the latest and greatest sun protection gear for the farm.

While skin cancer is a serious risk for all Australians, farmers and rural outdoor workers are at an even higher risk due to the amount of time spent outdoors. Skin cancer is one of the most preventable cancers and with a bit of forward planning before heading out to work, everyone can significantly reduce their risk of skin and eye damage, and ultimately skin cancer.
