SunSmart aims to minimise the human cost of skin cancer in Victoria. We have also taken a leadership role promoting a balance between the benefits and harms of ultraviolet (UV) radiation exposure and the links with vitamin D.
The Victorian Health Promotion Foundation (VicHealth) and Cancer Council Victoria jointly fund SunSmart. In 2004 we were appointed the World Health Organization (WHO) Collaborating Centre for UV Radiation.
In 2010 it will be 30 years since Sid Seagull first sang the catchy jingle - Slip! Slop! Slap! encouraging Australians to reduce their exposure to the sun.
Rates of skin cancer in young people are declining and fewer people are getting sunburnt. Victoria leads the way with new solarium legislation.
Our ongoing commitment to research tells us where and how best to act next. It’s important that gains made so far are not eroded over time. We need to continue shaping lifestyles and communities to minimise the risk of skin cancer.
